My Story

I am the owner and founder of Safety Through Service. I spent more than a decade as a city police officer, supervisor, and trainer. In those roles, I conducted needs assessments, designed curriculum, and provided instruction across a variety of disciplines including criminal and civil law, de-escalation, police driving, firearms, standardized field sobriety testing, and Mental Health First Aid. I was also a certified Drug Recognition Expert, recognized by the courts as a subject matter expert in horizontal gaze nystagmus and standardized field sobriety testing. I hold a number of professional certifications including Critical Incident Stress Debriefing, Peer Support Team Member, Crisis Negotiator, and Motor Officer. I also earned three life-saving awards during my career.

Alongside my career in law enforcement, I spent 16 years with a municipal fire department, holding the ranks of firefighter/EMT, lieutenant, and captain. I served as the safety officer or incident commander of numerous emergency scenes including house fires, car wrecks, and medical calls. I hold a number of professional certifications including ICS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, and 800, as well as Fire Officer I & II, Emergency Vehicle Driver, and Fire Instructor I.

Outside the office, I have promoted safety on two, three, and four wheels as a licensed North Carolina driver’s education instructor, in addition to being a motorcycle and Can-Am Spyder instructor.

I earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Elon University in Elon, NC, and a Masters of Public Administration from Marist University in Poughkeepsie, NY. I am currently a Ph.D. Candidate in Leadership and Organization Development at the University of Southern Maine, working on my dissertation and expecting to complete this degree in Spring 2026.

I currently reside in North Carolina with my wife, daughter, and son.
